History

The Hegeman String Band has had a long career in mummery. The band was organized on November 2, 1920 by music store owner Ernest A. Hegeman, a native of Holland. Since the 1921 New Year's Day parade, Hegeman String Band has been a consistent top ten prize finisher, comprising one of the best top prize records of any String Band.

Hegeman String Band was founded by Ernest A. Hegeman, a native of Holland, who first introduced the glockenspiel into the string bands. The glockenspiel (or "bells") is especially important because it doesn't get out of tune in the open air, as many other instruments do. [from "Birth of the String Bands", as told by Jack Towers]
